Instinct AI Assistant: What I Would Delegate
October 28, 2026
Why it matters
Instinct makes a compelling promise to people who already spend their working day inside software: personal errands could become a conversation rather than another dashboard. Its official introduction puts texting and calling at the center. The interesting product decision is how little machinery the user needs to see before getting started.
What stands out to me in Remy's demonstration is the follow-through. A list of restaurants still leaves someone responsible for getting a table. An assistant that contacts the business, waits for a reply and brings back a confirmation takes on more of that responsibility. For developers and business operators, that is a useful way to think about the value of personal agents.
These are Remy's experiences, rather than hands-on results of my own. A successful booking is a reason to investigate, not a reliable estimate of performance across every service or country. I would judge the product by the time it returns after supervision and by how clearly I can limit what it does.
Key points
- 18:28 Recovery is part of completing the job. A Danish phone-number requirement blocks the booking route, so the agent switches to email and later reports a confirmed appointment. The useful capability is keeping the task alive across an obstacle.
- 13:02 Getting started is part of the product's value. Remy describes signing in with a phone number and moving into iMessage. Someone can encounter a useful task before learning a new technical workflow.
- 19:32 Quiet execution creates uncertainty. Remy sometimes checks whether the agent is still working. A minimal interface needs enough status information to let users step away without becoming the task monitor.
- 21:08 Payment access changes the experiment. Remy creates a Wise digital card and sets a daily spending limit. That addresses one financial exposure; it does not control every consequence of an incorrect reservation or disclosure.
- 11:24 The privacy discussion needs a separate decision. The hosts discuss reports of email data remaining available after Google was disconnected. Those reports should lead users to inspect the product's documented retention and deletion behavior.
- 23:49 Remembered context can reduce data entry. Passport information and earlier travel details help the agent prepare related tasks. The same convenience makes it important to check whether reused information is accurate and current.
- 07:07 Agent coordination could make the network more useful. The trusted-person network suggests a way to reduce scheduling back-and-forth. It remains a product thesis in this discussion, rather than evidence of broad interoperability or settled sharing rules.
How to apply
Instinct AI assistant: how I would run a one-week trial
I would start with five actual personal errands that have an obvious finish line: research a local service, compare appointment windows, prepare an inquiry, follow up on a reply and arrange a straightforward booking. I would save identity documents and hard-to-reverse commitments for a later decision. This gives the assistant several opportunities to be useful without making the first experiment depend on a high-consequence task.
For each errand, record the estimated time to do it manually, the minutes spent briefing and checking the assistant, and any time spent fixing its work. Separate elapsed time from your attention. Waiting two hours for a business to reply can be fine if you are free to do something else during that period.
The calculation is simple: net time saved = estimated manual time − briefing − verification − rework. As an illustrative example, six errands that would take 12 minutes each represent 72 minutes. If instructions, checks and corrections take 20 minutes, the net gain is 52. That is a more useful measure than the number of messages exchanged or the most impressive screenshot.
Give the task a clear finish line
A useful request includes the intended outcome, boundaries and proof. For example:
Find three barbers in Pinheiros, São Paulo, with appointments this Saturday between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., for a haircut costing no more than R$120. Bring back prices, addresses and available times first. After I choose, prepare the booking and ask for confirmation before submitting it. Flag cancellation and no-show fees.
This structures the conversation, but a written instruction is not an enforced permission setting. Check the controls in the connected service before supplying account access or payment details. If you are using an agent while traveling or working in Brazil, test the local workflow explicitly. Chatting with your assistant on WhatsApp does not establish that it can message any business on WhatsApp; Remy's failed attempt illustrates that distinction.
Expand access one task at a time
| Stage | Initial delegation | Evidence to request | |---|---|---| | Research | Find options without connecting personal accounts | Sources, prices and availability checked | | Preparation | Draft a message or organize information you provide | A draft you can inspect | | Execution | Complete a bounded action you have approved | Confirmation you can verify with the provider |
For a reservation, check the date, time zone, address and cancellation conditions. A calendar entry records a plan; the provider's confirmation establishes whether the appointment exists. If payment is necessary, use controls available from your card issuer and an amount appropriate to the errand. Remy's roughly $500 daily limit describes his tolerance for that experiment, rather than a default another user should adopt.
Include an exit test
Before connecting a primary inbox, distinguish stopping access from deleting retained information. In the Connected services section of Instinct's official terms, the company says indexed data may remain in use after disconnection and points to a separate deletion request in the workspace. That is a concrete reason to begin with only the context an errand requires.
At the end of the week, I would look at confirmed completions, net minutes returned and the number of times I had to intervene. An assistant that repeatedly makes me check the thread may be consuming the attention I wanted back. One that lets me hand over a small responsibility and reliably return to something else has earned a more serious place in my routine.
